Sheril Tan

Roosa Chain Mail Holiday Bracelet
Meet the Designer-Artist

Where do you live?
Cavite, Philippines

Describe your artistic style.
I have no particular artistic style. I am open to endless possibilities on how a particular bead, finding or component can go about. But I have great fascination for chain mail.

What inspires you as a designer-artist?
Nature, life events, people, ancient arts and antiques.

What materials do you most enjoy working with?
Jumprings, colored gemstones and pearls.

What is the name of the piece you submitted with your success story?
Roosa Chain Mail Holiday Bracelet

What inspired this design?
The color of the seed beads and the Christmas Season inspired this design.

How did it come together?
I initially just wanted to add the seed beads in a traditional roosa chain mail weave, but I wanted more of the beads to be in the design, so I added the dangles.

Share Your Background

When and how did you begin making jewelry/beading?
I began making jewelry for myself about 5 years ago when I couldn't find the designs I like in stores.

Who introduced you to beading?
No one, but I was inspired by the success stories of Filipino women in the jewelry business here in the Philippines.

Do you have an artistic background?
None. I am a doctor, a Radiologist. I think being able to capture ultrasound and radiographic images of normal organs and diseases is already a piece of art.

How did you discover Fire Mountain Gems and BeadsĀ®?
A friend from the US brought me home a copy of BeadStyle magazine. I saw the ad in there.

What other hobbies do you have?
I do a little crocheting, paper crafts, especially origami with my kids.

Beading Success

What role does jewelry-making play in your life?
Jewelry-making started as a hobby, a de-stressor from my career as a doctor. When people began noticing my work that is when I made it a part-time career.

If you used jewelry-making as a way to bring in income, how are you selling yourself and your jewelry?
I have a website where I post photos of my jewelry for sale. Most of the orders I get are custom orders. Jewelry-making is not yet my main source of income but I'm happy that I was able to bring in additional income out of creativity.

Do you participate in any charity fundraisers?
Not at the moment. I would just love to be involved in activities like this.

Any advice for aspiring jewelry-artists?
Do not always go with the trend, but you can get ideas from what is current. When creative juices starts to flow, picture that idea in your mind and let your hands capture that vivid imagery to make that stunning piece of jewelry. Sometimes you do not achieve the design you have in mind, don't give up. It is a trial and error process. You can remove or add components until you are satisfied with it.
