Alice Gershowitz
Meet the Designer-Artist

Where do you live?
Grants Pass, Oregon

What inspires you as a designer-artist?
The possibilities. Colors, textures, shapes. I look to nature's color palette, I see scrollwork in an old iron gate, visit the works of past artists or periods such as Art Deco. All around us is beauty that is awe inspiring.

What medium do you work with mostly?
I love working with precious and semiprecious gems and beads. They create a special richness and depth of character. I also like working with metals, especially precious metals. I like to work with and experiment with whatever medium suits the project and I like to try new techniques.

Why did you become enchanted with this style of jewelry making?
It all started when a friend invited me to make a simple beading project. I became inspired with possibilities and found a new creative outlet. I used to sell a line of higher end jewelry. I loved it but felt I could make what I was selling. Soon I was taking metal-smithing classes at RCC. Currently I am experimenting with whatever medium I can get my hands on. And it goes on from there, wanting to learn and do it all. This had all lead to getting hired to be a Jewelry Designer here at Fire Mountain Gems and Beads. I can create and learn and experiment all day long and get paid for doing something I love.
