Meet the Designer-Artist

Where do you live?
Ozark, Montana

Describe your artistic style.
I don't have just one style. I just go with whatever inspiration hits me.

What inspires you as a designer-artist?
Nature is my biggest inspiration.

What materials do you most enjoy working with?
Gemstones and organics.

What is the name of the piece you submitted with your success story?
Sunset Blaze

What inspired this design?
Carnelian has always reminded me of a blazing sunset.

How did it come together?
I planned it sort of, but it changed as I started putting it together.

Share Your Background

When and how did you begin making jewelry/beading?
Back in the '70s, I would go to a bead store in Wichita, Kansas. It was set up for making your own jewelry items. I loved it.

Who introduced you to beading?
My mother, her mother and her brother.

Do you have an artistic background?
Yes. My mother Pat is an extremely talented artist. Her brother, George Baird Purviance, was a well known jewelry designer in California before his death.

How did you discover Fire Mountain Gems and BeadsĀ®?
I was searching online for a bead company, and Fire Mountain Gems stood out as the most reputable one. I was impressed with your website.

What other hobbies do you have?
Drawing, painting, sewing and cooking.

Beading Success

What role does jewelry-making play in your life?
Beading is part-time. I work full-time as a night supervisor at a Mexican Villa restaurant in Ozark, Montana. I would love to be able to retire and bead full-time.

If you use jewelry-making as a way to bring in income, how are you selling yourself and your jewelry?
We have a booth in a local antique and collectibles mall, on Main Street Mall, Ozark, Montana. I have attended a couple of craft fairs.

Any advice for aspiring jewelry-artists?
Yes. Don't be afraid to think outside the box. For example, in this area turquoise and coral are the standard, but I have used turquoise with just about everything with great results.
